The 2011 Tsunami

Ishinomaki and Matsushima Bays were among the hardest hit areas by the magnitude 9.0 Great East Japan Earthquake & Tsunami on March 11, 2011. The tsunami devastated much of the low-lying coastal areas of the prefectures of Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima. Those areas still show the evidence of the quake and inundation, which reached three to five miles inland in some areas. There is more information about how areas in the photographs have responded to the impacts of the tsunami in the linked sections.
