Arahama, Sendai and the Tsunami

Arahama

The Arahama area lies to the east of the central city of Sendai, Japan. The area was a mix of agriculture and residential. The 2011 Tsunami did major damage to this area. One residential area was almost completely destroyed. The one building to stand was the Arahama School. Residents took refuge on the roof overnight in snowy weather. They were later airlifted to safety. The school is now a memorial which we visited in 2018.
