The first exhibit of George Butler’s photographs was held in Sendai from May 1, 2018 to August 26, 2018 at the 3/11 Memorial Community Center. The center is a memorial facility for reconstruction from the Great East Japan Earthquake was opened inside Arai Station on the Sendai Subway Tozai line. There are exhibits regarding damage from the disaster, the state of reconstruction, and the appeal of eastern Sendai, as well as workshops and other activities that keep the memory of the disaster alive for future generations.
This exhibit was somewhat unique in showing what the region was like in 1951, before post-war industrialization,and growth and before the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami in March 2011.
